via Times of India, 27 June 2021: The government of Tamil Nadu is looking to repatriate a statue of Hanuman, which was stolen in 1978 and later acquired by the Asian Civilisations Museum. Singapore is not a signatory to the 1970 Unesco Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property.
Soon, the Tamil Nadu government would initiate steps to bring back an exquisitely crafted 15th century Hanuman idol stolen from a temple in Nagapattinam’s Anandamangalam village.
“Finally, in 2019, three idols were traced to London and broughtback to Tamil Nadu last year. The Hanuman idol of the samegroup was traced to the Asian Civilisation Museum inSingapore, which had acquired it in1998,” Vijay Kumar told TOI.
