Readers may be interested in this talk by Dr. Phacharaporn Phanomvan on Wednesday (20 October) on Ayutthaya, part of the Temasek History Research Centre lecture series.
This lecture introduces the audience to the rise of Ayutthaya, from a small city-state to its expansionist heights, the decline in the late 18th century, and eventual transition and its roles in shaping contemporary Chao Phaya Delta identity. We will be looking at Ayutthaya’s urban and material culture network, and its spread across the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean. The lecture will also introduce how quasi-international cosmopolitanism in different Ayutthaya cities led to diverse material identities, particularly fine arts and cuisine. It will also explore the much-overlooked subject of the Tai-speaking diaspora and its relationship with Ayutthaya as it rose to power and eventually declined.
