The Banda Islands are famous for the spices and infamous for the massacre that was instigated by Jan Pieterszoon Coen 400
years ago. To obtain a spice monopoly for the Dutch East India Company (VOC), prominent figures were slaughtered. The
murder is still commemorated through a local version of the Cakalele dance, and the Fort itself stands witness to the fight

be used to empower local communities and their perspective on the colonial past.
