via Khmer Times, 07 February 2023: The APSARA Authority has restored a moat north of Angkor Thom to protect Siem Reap and its inhabitants from flooding as well as provide water for daily use.
The Department of Water Management, Forests and Infrastructure of the APSARA Authority announced that it had restored a moat, that has been dried up for centuries.
The moat is located north of Angkor Thom and was constructed during Angkorian period.
According to the report released by the APSARA Authority, the moat is 800 metres long and 400 metres wide. The moat was dried up due to abandonment and lack of care for centuries. The restoration and rehabilitation of the dry river irrigation system is in line with the project to restore the ancient irrigation system, which is abundant in the Angkor area.
