via Manila Bulletin, 06 March 2023: The Philippine House Committee on Basic Education and Culture approved a bill that would create a heritage zone around Quiapo Church.
The House Committee on Basic Education and Culture on Monday, March 6, approved a substitute bill, including amendments and committee report, creating the Quiapo National Heritage Zone after lawmaker threshed out details on its funding and conservation plans.
The unnumbered substitute bill to House Bill (HB) No. 3750, or “Declaring the immediate environs of Quiapo Church, Plaza Miranda, San Sebastian Church, and Plaza del Carmen as national heritage zone, providing for its restoration, rehabilitation, conservation, and development, and appropriating funds therefor,” received no objections from the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) and the Department of Tourism (DOT).
Authored by Manila 3rd District Rep. Joel Chua, the bill seeks to turn the historic Quiapo Church and its immediate environs into a heritage zone after the study of the technical working group chaired by the lawmaker.
