via Khmer Times, 12 July 2023: The “Khmer Ancient House” research project in Battambang province has discovered evidence of human settlement since the 5th century at the Baset Temple site, but no ancient houses have been found, with fragments of plates, pots, and pans indicating long-term human occupation, prompting further research in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts to understand the past and cultural heritage of ancient Khmer people.
“Baset temple was built in the 11th century and we thought that people lived there at that time. After studying the fragments discovered at the digs, which went down to three metres, we now know that people have occupied the area since the 5th century. The research is very important for us to understand our past, the ancient Khmer people, and their social and economic activities,” Sovannara said.
He noted that the advantage of archaeological site is bringing Khmer citizens and students together to better understand the value of research work, especially the value of the national cultural heritage for the whole nation and local people. Citizen should participate in preserving their local heritage.
The archaeological research project was conducted at four different sites in the area. Two sites have been shut down, while the other two sites are open for visitors to look at the research work.
