The Archaeology Unit (AU) was formed in 2010 and inaugurated by H.E. President S R Nathan in August 2011. AU conducts excavations in Singapore, concentrating on the material culture of the period from 1300 to 1600, but also maintains an interest in the lives of Singapore’s inhabitants during the colonial period of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Beyond Singapore, AU pursues collaborative research in the archaeology of civilisation in Southeast Asia and its intra-regional links. It also collaborates with institutions in the Asia and Pacific regions to conduct research and training, and to disseminate published and unpublished reports on archaeological research.Intern(s) will carry out archival research and help with post-excavation cleaning and cataloguing of artefacts at the Archaeology Unit. If required, the intern(s) will also assist with minor fieldwork.Job Description
The intern will be expected to participate in any of the following tasks:
- Archival research that is not limited to: Cartography, Photos, Official and non-official records, Oral histories, Newspapers, Journals and other publications, Academic and non-academic literature and media
- Conduct research of various collections housed in the ISEAS library
- Writing short summaries and descriptions of archival material
- Help with back-end archaeological work that may consist of artefact processing, cleaning, and documentation
- Fieldwork, if required, may not be limited to: Foot surveys, Watching briefs, Excavations
Requirements
- Research interest in history, archaeology, and ethnography of Southeast Asia
- Good analytical, organisational, and writing skills
- Motivated self-starter and must possess team spirit and initiative
- A strong academic record
- Archaeological experience is advantageous but not required as training will be provided
