via Antara, 24 October 2023: An interdisciplinary team of experts from various countries convened in Magelang, Central Java, to discuss the conservation of Borobudur Temple. The 8th International Experts’ Meeting on Borobudur emphasized not just the physical conservation of the temple but also the importance of community participation. Wiwit Kasiyati, Sub-Coordinator of the Borobudur World Heritage and Cultural Heritage, stressed the need to preserve local cultures as Borobudur becomes a major international tourist destination.
Conservation and stone specialists as well as members of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) were among participants at the 8th International Experts’ Meeting on Borobudur.
At the meeting, they discussed issues related to physical conservation of Borobudur and community participation in the temple’s conservation efforts, Sub-Coordinator of the Borobudur World Heritage and Cultural Heritage (MCB) Wiwit Kasiyati stated here, Tuesday.
“Now, the community participation is a number one priority. We are no longer able to think about the temple’s physical conservation only. We must also think about the local communities,” she emphasized.
