via Khmer Times, 24 January 2024: Archaeologists from the APSARA National Authority are conducting excavations at Bayon Temple in Cambodia’s Angkor Archaeological Park to restore an ancient pond. This project aims to uncover the pond’s original dimensions and structure, investigating whether soil deposition was natural or a result of the abandonment of Angkor as the capital.
Archaeologists from the APSARA National Authority are conducting excavations in the south-eastern part of the Bayon Temple, formerly believed to be the structure of an ancient pond, to study the sediments and size of the pond to restore this reservoir.
Archaeologist Khieu Chan says the excavations being carried out by the working team of the Department of Water, Forestry and Infrastructure Management to find out exactly how large the structure of the ancient pond was. And did water bring the soil to fill into this pond, or was it eroded after Angkor was abandoned as capital?
