via Khmer Times, 26 January 2024: Cambodia is preparing to nominate the ancient temples of Banteay Chhmar, Phnom Chisor, and Phnom Da for UNESCO World Heritage listing. The Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, led by Minister Phoeurng Sackona, is spearheading this initiative, emphasizing the importance of preserving and promoting national cultural heritage. The targeted temples, spanning from the Funan to the Angkor era, are significant for their historical, architectural, and cultural values, marking a crucial step in Cambodia’s efforts to safeguard its archaeological legacy.
The government will apply for UNESCO World Heritage listing for the temples of Banteay Chhmar, Phnom Chisor, and Phnom Da in the near future.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the meeting to review the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts’ work results of 2023 and the direction of work for 2024 on Wednesday, Minister Phoeurng Sackona said the Ministry is ready to apply for listing of the temples.
“I once again appreciate and commend the efforts of leaders and civil servants at all levels who have worked hard to fulfill their duties in the cause of preserving, promoting, and developing the preservation and protection of our national cultural heritage,” she said.
