via Khmer Times, 22 February 2024: The Apsara National Authority is undertaking a significant project to register 1,656 scattered stones around the outer walls of Angkor Wat, aiming to pinpoint their origins as part of the temple’s towers, roofs, or sculptures. Led by archaeologist An Sopheap, the team employs drones for photographic documentation and assigns location IDs to each stone, facilitating future restoration efforts.
The working team of the Department of Conservation of Monuments and Preventive Archaeology of the Apsara National Authority is preparing to register 1656 scattered stones at the outer walls of Angkor Wat to know more about their location as roof stones or tower stones.
Archaeologist of the Apsara National Authority, An Sopheap, said that some of the stones may have been the structure of the three towers of the western gate of Angkor Wat.
