“Southeast Asian Studies Now” will highlight how the support of the Henry Luce Foundation Initiative on Southeast Asia underscored the significance of Southeast Asian Studies in both regional and global contexts.
Volume Themes and Objectives:
Our edited volume aims to foreground the vibrant and critical developments in Southeast Asian Studies, addressing the necessity for a transdisciplinary approach and emphasizing the region’s role from both within and outside its geographical boundaries. In light of this, we are particularly interested in contributions that resonate with the following themes:
Voices from Southeast Asia: Encouraging narratives that position Southeast Asia at the forefront of its own study, challenging the perception of Southeast Asian Studies as primarily a Western domain and promoting knowledge production from within the region. This theme will also explore the roles of Southeast Asian academic institutions in promoting non-Western perspectives and facilitating research in the region.
Transdisciplinarity and Inter-regional Cooperation: Highlighting the importance of transcending traditional academic boundaries and facilitating collaboration across different areas of expertise, particularly in environmental studies, climate change, and disaster risk management.
Student Training: Crafting undergraduate and graduate programs that can meet the curricular expectations of our institutions while still prioritizing the region and its canons. This theme invites a critical examination of how curricula are designed to prepare students for future challenges, incorporating innovative teaching methodologies and responding to the evolving needs of Southeast Asian Studies.
Community Engagement and Infrastructure Investment: Advocating for a closer partnership with community members, policymakers, and organizations to co-create knowledge that is both rooted in ground realities and impactful, alongside stressing the need for substantial investment in academic infrastructure.
Innovative Language Pedagogies: Contributions on modern approaches to language teaching in Southeast Asia, including advanced pedagogical strategies, the use of technology in language education, and envouraging linguistic and cultural proficiency.
