via Khmer Times, 10 April 2024: The inclusion of Koh Ker in the UNESCO World Heritage List marks a significant turning point for Cambodia’s tourism industry. This recognition not only alleviates the over-tourism pressures on Angkor Wat but also enhances Cambodia’s appeal by offering a new destination for cultural and historical exploration. Industry experts highlight the potential of Koh Ker to attract diverse tourist demographics, including academics and history enthusiasts, thus supporting sustainable tourism development.
The prestigious National Geographic magazine recently featured the new UNESCO accredited Koh Ker among the Kingdom’s ancient Khmer Empire temples. For some time now the industry has been bemoaning the threat of over-tourism and its many associated evils with the stampede for Angkor Wat. Therefore, the September 17, 2023 landmark of Koh Ker’s anointment in the UNESCO World Heritage List came as a huge relief.
Koh Ker’s addition to the UNESCO Heritage List brings a fresh allure to Cambodia’s tourism landscape, said Jean-Benoît Lasselin, C4 partner, C4 Adventures. As a new destination, it diversifies the tourism offerings beyond the traditional Angkor main sites, attracting travellers seeking unique cultural experiences. This diversification is crucial for sustainable tourism development, as it reduces the strain on heavily visited areas and distributes tourism income more evenly across the country.
