In the last five years bioarchaeology of Southeast Asia has undergone significant change in terms of research dynamics and engagement with cutting edge bioarchaeological theories and methods. For the first time, more researchers from within Southeast Asia than from Global North countries are contributing to active bioarchaeological research projects within the region. In addition, the last 5 years has seen a considerable expansion in diagnosis of a great number of diseases in the prehistoric record including yaws, scurvy, and thalassaemia as well as a greater representation of Island Southeast Asia in the literature. This special issue aims to present the scientific advancements underway in the region, reflecting the biosocial diversity of prehistory in the region.
