via Vietnam Plus, 18 May 2024: Excavations at the Nguom Stone Roof site in Thai Nguyen province have unearthed artifacts dating back 60,000 to 120,000 years – the dates are really old, and I’m not sure if the reported dates are a typo on the journalists’ part. Conducted by the Vietnam Institute of Archaeology and the Thai Nguyen Provincial Museum, this research highlights the site’s importance in understanding Vietnam’s prehistoric culture and craftsmanship.
The excavation campaign has been conducted since March 20. The artefacts uncovered are estimated to date around 60,000 to 120,000 years ago. This type of stone roof is unique in Vietnam, as it presents evidence of the earliest stone tool use and craftsmanship in its territory.
The archaeological research in Than Sa commune in general and specifically at the Nguom Stone Roof site has been ongoing since the 1980s. Through the artefacts discovered, experts have identified this as a significant archaeological site with immense importance for the cultural history of the nation.
