via The Manila Times, 21 May 2024: Archaeologists have resumed excavations at Callao Cave in the Philippines, a site known for significant prehistoric findings. This new phase of digging aims to uncover more about early human presence in Southeast Asia, following the discovery of Homo luzonensis remains in 2019.
The group of archeologists from the University of the Philippines (UP) started digging anew in the caves of Peñablanca, Cagayan.
Archeologists are hoping to find more fossils and tools of the Homo Luzonensis, an archaic human species discovered in Callao Cave in 2007.
UP Prof. Armand Mijares said their excavations in Callao Cave and other places in Peñablanca town is significant not only for the province but for the country as well.
Cagayan Gov. Manuel Mamba is supporting the archeological explorations of the team that includes students from Bangkok, Thailand, and the University of California.
