via Khmer Times, 30 and 31 May 2024: The APSARA National Authority has launched a boat ride service at North Baray near Neak Poan Temple to boost tourism and create jobs for locals. Supported by GIZ and UNESCO, the tours offer scenic views, rare wildlife, and historical insights into the Angkor era. Initiated in early 2022 after pandemic delays, the service aims to enhance visitor experiences and promote cultural heritage.
Deputy Director of the department, Tes Sothy, said that the primary purpose of the initiative is to foster tourism development in the region while generating employment opportunities for the local community residing in Phlang and Leang Dai villages, Leang Dai commune, in Siem Reap province’s Angkor Thom district.
He noted that arranging a boat tour at the baray enables visitors to see various rare bird species and capture stunning photographs, particularly of the scenic sunset.
“We have been conducting training sessions on boat rowing techniques and equipping the community with the assistance of GIZ. As a first step, we are operating with eight boats,” he added.
According to ANA, Jayatataka Baray, including the temple of Preah Khan, was constructed during the reign of King Jayavarman VII. When tourists embark on a boat ride across the baray, they are reminded of the Angkorian era’s glorious splendor and its distinctive features, it said.
