via Khmer Times, 16 July 2024: The Apsara National Authority is 80% complete with restoring the southern stairs and lion statues at Phnom Bakheng temple, with five months remaining for the final level. The collaboration with the World Monuments Fund has been vital. Of the twelve lion statues, five have been restored, though some fragments were beyond repair.
The repairs are made possible under the project of the World Monument Fund (WMF), supported by the US in terms of financial resources and American archaeologist experts.
“Collaboration between the Apsara National Authority and the World Monument Fund of the United States has been instrumental in this work,” read the ANA statement.
According to ANA, the team is making significant progress in restoring the southern stairs, with four of the five levels of staircases already finished, with the remaining levels completed by the end of the year.
Van Va, Head of the Phnom Bakheng Temple site, said that the restoration work on the five-level staircase is currently 80% complete, with only one level remaining to be restored.
