    • Fully Funded Alphawood Scholarships Open for Southeast Asian Art Studies
      SOAS University of London is now accepting applications for the Alphawood Scholarships for the 2025/26 academic year. These scholarships support students pursuing the SOAS-Alphawood Postgraduate Diploma in Asian Art or the MA History of Art and Archaeology. The program aims to advance the understanding and preservation of ancient to pre-modern Buddhist and Hindu art and architecture in Southeast Asia. Scholarships cover full tuition fees, a maintenance allowance of £18,700 per annum, economy flights to and from the UK, and visa-related costs. Applicants should be residents of Southeast Asian countries, including Indonesia, and must demonstrate a commitment to contributing to the preservation and advancement of Southeast Asian art post-study. The application deadline is 15 December 2024.
    • Alphawood Scholarships Open for Southeast Asian Art Students
      SOAS University of London is offering Alphawood Scholarships for the 2025/26 academic year, supporting students pursuing the online SOAS-Alphawood Postgraduate Diploma in Asian Art.     • Singapore Hosts Archaeological Heritage Talks & Training Nov 25–30
      The Heritage Conservation Centre in Singapore is organizing a five-day workshop on archaeological collection care and conservation from 25 to 29 November 2024. This program emphasizes Singapore’s archaeological heritage on the first day, followed by broader regional conservation topics. Theoretical sessions will be livestreamed on Microsoft Teams for accessibility to students and professionals across Southeast Asia. The workshop concludes on 30 November with expert-led talks on Singapore’s terrestrial and maritime archaeology, exploring local heritage and challenges in the field. Both on-site and livestream attendance are available.

    • PhD Opportunity: Language and Society in Southeast Asia at KITLV
      The Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV) in Leiden is offering a PhD position focusing on the interplay between language and society in Southeast Asia. Applicants are encouraged to develop their own research proposals, potentially exploring topics such as historical perspectives through inscriptions, manuscripts, and/or colonial-era texts; or the impact of AI on language translation.     • Join Hoa Lu Excavations with Trent University’s Vietnam Fieldwork
      Masters students at Trent University are invited to join a fieldwork team exploring the ancient Vietnamese imperial capital of Hoa Lu, specifically the Ba Ngo residential site.     • UNESCO Hosts Workshop on World Heritage Archives for SE Asia
      via UNESCO, 21 October 2024: UNESCO’s Regional Office in Bangkok is holding a virtual workshop titled “Introduction to World Heritage Site Archives Management in South-East Asia” on 20-21 November 2024. The event, aimed at World Heritage site managers and archivists in Southeast Asia, will provide training on organizing, preserving, and utilizing archives for heritage site conservation. Topics will include case studies from sites like Cambodia’s Koh Ker, Indonesia’s Borobudur, and Thailand’s Ayutthaya. Led by experts from UNESCO and the Getty Conservation Institute, participants will develop tools for managing archival challenges and receive certification upon completion. Applications close on 31 October 2024.
    • Apply Now: Online Workshop on Impact Assessment for World Heritage
      ICCROM, IUCN, and the Norwegian Ministry of Climate and Environment are organizing an online International Workshop on Impact Assessment in a World Heritage Context from 09 to 11 December 2024. The workshop aims to train up to 25 participants in applying updated methodologies for impact assessments at World Heritage sites. Participants will learn to use the new Guidance and Toolkit for Impact Assessment, exploring strategies for sustainable development while preserving heritage values. Applications are open until 08 November 2024. The course is free, but participants must cover their own equipment and internet costs.

    • Harvard Offers Postdoctoral Fellowships for Prehistoric ResearchThe American School of Prehistoric Research is offering Junior Fellowships for recent PhD holders pursuing research in Old World prehistory. These two-year postdoctoral fellowships, starting on 01 July 2025, include a stipend of $80,000, a research grant of $20,000/year, and full benefits. Fellows are expected to conduct independent research, teach one course during their second year, and be in residence at Harvard when not conducting fieldwork. Applications, including a research proposal, CV, recommendations, and work samples, are due by 25 January 2025.

This consultation, running from 01 October to 31 October 2024, seeks to address gaps in current laws. With growing interest in archaeology, recent discoveries at sites like Fort Canning and historic shipwrecks have enriched understanding of Singapore’s past, emphasizing the need for better legal safeguards.
    • Seminar on Sulu Sultanate’s Diplomacy and Trade in the 18th-19th CenturyAn online forum, Re-Imagining Sulu: Global and Local Connections, c. 1700-1900, will explore the Sulu sultanate’s diplomatic and economic relations. Scholars from Asia and Europe will examine how the sultanate engaged in international trade and diplomacy to expand its influence across Southeast Asia, including Mindanao, Palawan, and Borneo. The forum will also highlight Sulu’s relations with European, East, and Southeast Asian powers and discuss gaps in current historiography. The event will take place on 23 October 2024, from 12 PM to 3 PM CET.
    • Heritage Documentation Training Grant Now Open for ApplicationsCyArk’s Heritage Documentation Training Grant offers free photogrammetry and digital heritage documentation training for 10 selected individuals. The program runs for three weeks, starting on 16 December 2024, and includes live virtual sessions, practical projects, and a certificate upon completion. Applications are open until 01 November 2024. The grant aims to empower participants to use digital tools in heritage conservation and restoration within their communities.

      The Field Museum in Chicago seeks an Assistant or Associate Curator of Pacific or East Asian Anthropology to lead research and oversee its collections, starting in January 2025. The successful candidate will collaborate with descendant communities, curate exhibits, and promote Indigenous perspectives through research and public outreach. This joint position with the University of Illinois at Chicago requires a Ph.D. in Anthropology, with an emphasis on experience in fieldwork, collections management, and museum curation.       New Mandala invites recent or soon-to-graduate PhD scholars in social sciences and humanities with a focus on Southeast Asia to apply for its Emerging Scholar Award. Supported by the Australian National University, the award offers A$1,000 to 15 successful applicants to craft a 3,000-word essay based on their research. The essays will be published in early 2025, promoting diverse academic perspectives on Southeast Asia.

      The CAA-Getty International Program, supported by Getty, funds art historians, curators, and visual arts professionals globally to attend the CAA Annual Conferences.
