The editors of Archaeology in Oceania, Peter White and Peter Sheppard, thought it might be neat to have a journal issue dedicated to rock art. I’ve offered to explore the idea with you all. We’d be looking for 7-8 articles focused on rock art research from across the region – some from Australia, and some from the Pacific islands and western Pacific rim.
The proposed issue would be October 2021. For NZ, I’d be looking at doing a review of the current archaeological understanding of Māori rock art. Similar island or regional reviews could be of interest, as well as other thematic research or methodological approaches, including rock art conservation, interpretation and management challenges in Pacific archaeology. If you have something brewing and think you’d like to contribute to such an issue, please drop me a quick note by the end of October expressing your interest. I’ll then feed back to the Peters and we’ll see if a special issue proposal might firm up.
