via Khmer Times, 08 December 2020: The fossil tree that was discovered last year in Ratanakiri province was re-excavated for further research.
Experts from the Ministry of Environment have begun the second study of a hundreds-of-millions-of-years-old 17-metre-long tree fossil at the Lumphat Wildlife Sanctuary in Ratanakiri province.
A member of the ministry’s Heritage Area Department fossil study team, Lim Vanchan, said that in 2019, experts excavated the fossil for the first time. In early December, the team began a second excavation when they uncovered more of the fossil with petrified roots, leaves and bark.
“Last year we found the tree and studied it for the first time. This year we continue to excavate because we did not finish, so, we will continue to dig and uncover more of the tree,” Vanchan said.
