via Myanmar Times, 15 January 2021: Religious Affairs and Culture Mnister of Myanmar calls for a no-conflict zone in Mrauk U. The town is being nominated for World Heritage.
A government minister is calling for the declaration of the Mrauk-U town ancient heritage zone as a ‘no-conflict’ zone in order to preserve its past splendour, while the government worked to have it included in the Unesco heritage list.
Thura U Aung Ko, minister for religious Affairs and Culture, said it is calling on armed groups in the region, including the Arakan Army (AA) and government security forces, not to engage in fighting in the area.
The one year delay in UNESCO nomination process due to security concerns, makes it important to preserve the ancient structures in the ancient heritage zone.
