Over time, the Orang Lut tribe assimilated the Malay culture and lost their native language. But the descendants of these seafarers revived their culture through food, as did Asnida Daud.
A visit to the apartment of his late aunt Asnida Daud always promised to be mouth watering, with the whole family sitting cross legged on the floor and eating with their hands as usual.
Asnida continues to cook the way she knows. Asnida did this when her aunt moved into a small apartment in Clementi, a residential area in southwest Singapore, not far from the village on the edge of Sudong Island, where she lived.
