via Malay Mail, 28 September 2022: Update on the recent developments surround the illegal demolition of a historic tomb in Penang. The state authorities will attempt to salvage the remains but it remains unclear on who bears the accountability for the action. A seperate story (listed below) also indicates that the state government has yet to set up a heritage council, even though provisions to do so were set up in 2016.
Penang Heritage Commissioner Rosli Nor today promised to salvage what it can of a priceless 138-year-old tomb that was illegally demolished and dumped in the Jelutong landfill last month.
He said the agency has managed to identify pieces of the intricately carved stonemasonry from Foo Teng Nyong’s tomb from the landfill and hopes to display them at the state museum on Macalister Road.
However, he added that full reconstruction may not be possible.
“It would be difficult to reconstruct the tomb to its original condition as our photographic documentation was not clear enough,” he told reporters here.
