via Khmer Times, 05 October 2022: A Bayon-style naga head was discovered near Angkor Thom, discovered when a tree collapsed.
A dragon head sculpture, carved in the Bayon style, was discovered after a collapsing tree revealed the sculpture that was entangled in its roots.
The sculpture was uncovered in the compound of Wat Tep Pranom, the former capital of Angkor Thom, Siem Reap.
Chhouk Somala, Head of the Art Registration Team of the Department of Preservation and Archaeology of the APSARA Authority, said that the sculpture was buried in the ground about half a metre deep. When it rained, the tree collapsed and revealed the buried sculpture.
The artefact is 1.2 metres long, one metre wide and 0.3 metres thick. Parts of the original sculpture has been broken.
