via Khmer Times, 03 January 2023:
The Ministry of Culture and Fine arts has stopped the demolition of the 100-year-old stupa in Botum pagoda in Phnom Penh following a barrage of criticism.
Some parts of the stupa were demolished in recent days to make way for a new compound within the pagoda.
The stupa was severely damaged yesterday and authorities will repair it.
Venerable Khim Sorn, chief of the secretariat of the Mohanikaya Monk Order and chief of Phnom Penh Municipal Monks, said yesterday that the monks in the pagoda did not intend to demolish the heritage stupa and it was a misunderstanding which led to the partial demolition.
