Yogyakarta’s Cosmological Axis: A New UNESCO World Heritage Site

via various news sources, 19 September 2023: UNESCO has designated the Yogyakarta Philosophical Axis as a world cultural heritage during its 45th Session of the World Heritage Committee. This spatial concept, created by Sultan Hamengku Buwono I in the 18th century, embodies Javanese philosophy and universal values, emphasizing the importance of cultural preservation and conservation.Lots of news stories indexed below, but most are in Bahasa Indonesia.

The Philosophy Axis of Yogyakarta is a spatial concept created by the first king of the Yogyakarta Palace, Sultan Hamengku Buwono I, in the 18th century. Its spatial concept is based on Javanese conception, in the form of a straight road structure that spans between Panggung Krapyak in the south, Yogyakarta Palace in the middle, and Tugu Yogyakarta in the north.

The Yogyakarta Philosophy Axis and several surrounding areas are the embodiment of Javanese philosophy regarding human existence. This existence includes the human life cycle (sangkan paraning dumadi), harmonious life between humans and between humans and nature (hamemayu hayuning Bawana), the relationship between humans and the Creator and leaders with their people ( manunggaling kawula gusti), as well as the microcosmic and macrocosmic worlds.
