via various sources, 07 Dec 2023: India has officially nominated the mound-burial system of the Ahom dynasty in Assam, known as ‘Maidams’ or ‘Assam’s pyramids,’ for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List for 2023-24. This ancient royal burial ground, located in Assam’s Charaideo district, represents a significant cultural and historical site, reflecting the unique burial practices and architectural ingenuity of the Ahom dynasty. The nomination, backed by extensive research and documentation, highlights the site’s potential to gain global recognition for its historical and cultural value.
The mound-burial system of the Ahom dynasty in Assam has been submitted as India’s nomination for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List for the year 2023-24, the Centre informed the Parliament on Thursday.
The unique burial mounds, represented by pyramid-like structures known as ‘moidams’, were used by the Tai-Ahom dynasty which ruled for around 600 years in Assam.
