via The Nation, 16 May 2024: A recent excavation in Tonpheung district, Bokeo, Laos, uncovered the largest Buddha statue to date, standing over two meters tall, along with nine smaller images. These artefacts, believed to be remnants of ancient temples, are now safeguarded in Thongthip Phatthanaram temple. The excavation has been elevated to a national level to ensure professional handling and accurate record-keeping.
A statue of Buddha at least two metres tall was excavated from a sandy area near the Mekong River In Laos on Thursday, making it the largest statue to be unearthed during the ongoing search for ancient artefacts in Tonpheung district, Bokeo district, which began in March.
Nine other Buddha images were dug up on Wednesday. One was 30 centimetres tall and 25 centimetres wide, another was 27 centimetres tall and 18 centimetres wide, and a third measured 36×30 centimetres.
